THE World’s Biggest Coffee Morning is about to get even bigger this year.

And organisers are appealing for the region’s bakers and biscuit makers to get involved.

Macmillan Cancer Support’s annual fundraising events have already raised tens of millions since it started in the early 1990s - last year’s event alone topped £20 million.

And it is hoped the desperately-needed cash will continue to roll in later this month.

There are already seven local Coffee Mornings organised - that we know of - with many more in the pipeline.

A spokeswoman for Macmillan Cancer Support told us: “There are currently two million people living with cancer in the UK.

“By 2030 there will be four million. We want to make sure we’re there for all of them.

“One in three of us will get cancer and for most it will be the toughest thing we ever face. When you’re facing the toughest fight of your life, you need a team of inspiring people in your corner with you.

“That’s who we are. We provide medical, emotional, practical and financial support and we push for a better cancer care system. We’re the team that gives you the strength and energy to face the fight and get through it.” Thousands of Coffee Morning events are planned for the weekend of September 26 and 27.

Amongst the growing list is an event in the Waverley Castle, near Darnick, on Friday, September 26 from 3pm.

MacMillan Cancer Support’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning will also be held in the Lauderdale Hotel, Lauder, on the same day from 10am to 12 noon. And at exactly the same time they will be serving up hot steaming coffee and slices of cake in Oxton’s War Memorial Hall.

Yarrowford will also host its Biggest Ever Coffee Morning in the Village Hall from 10am on the Friday The following day the Big Coffee Morning arrives in Ashkirk, where the staff at the Smiddy Restaurant and Bar will be tempting people in from 10am with cakes, scones, coffees and teas.

There’s also an event planned in Kelso from 10am on the Saturday morning at 42 Bowmont Street. And it is expected many more will pop up before the fundraising weekend.

In 2013 154,000 people signed up to the coffee morning, raising a record £20 million for charity.

The spokeswoman added: “This year we want to raise even more money to help change the lives of people affected by cancer.

“We hope you’ll get together with friends, family and colleagues on Friday, September 26 and make time for what really matters.

“To get involved all you need to do is sign up and we’ll send you a lovely Coffee Morning kit, full of everything you need for a successful coffee morning.

“It makes inviting your friends and raising the money really easy, so you’ll find organising your coffee morning as simple as can be.” If you would like to organise a Macmillan Cancer Care coffee morning go to www.coffee.macmillan.org.uk
