AN 88-year-old driver has been warned if he offends again he’ll lose his licence.

Thomas Dickie was spotted by traffic police overtaking as he approached a blind bend on the A703 near Eddleston on July 28.

The pensioner from Charles Street in Penicuik was pulled over.

At Peebles Sheriff Court on Wednesday, Procurator fiscal depute Tessa Bradley said: “Officers were monitoring the straight which is an accident blackspot and they saw the accused’s blue Honda Jazz overtake an HGV.

“He was still mid-manoeuvre when he was approaching the bend.” Dickie, who already has three points on his licence, told officers that he was 'satisfied’ that he had enough room to overtake.

And that he required his licence for visiting his family in Perth.

Defence lawyer Iain Tweedie said: “His life would be curtailed if he lost his licence. It would cut him off from his family.” Sheriff Peter Paterson fined Dickie £300 and endorsed his licence with six penalty points.

The Sheriff added: “This means you know have nine points on your licence - one more offence and you will lose it.”
