SPRING may well be in the air but next week the heat of the South Pacific will be felt in the Memorial Hall, Innerleithen Innerleithen & District Amateur Operatic Society present Rogers and Hammerstein’s ever popular South Pacific from Monday, March 31, to Saturday, April 5.

Adapted from Tales of the South Pacific, a Pulitzer Prize winning novel by James Michener, Innerleithen Opera have staged the show twice before, first in 1962 and then in 1991.

The show, set on a South Pacific island during World War Two, centres on the troubled relationship between a young American nurse Nellie Forbush (Nicola Watt) and a middle aged French planter Emile de Becque (Iain Scott), the comedic money-making exploits of a local Tonkinese woman Bloody Mary and American sailor Luther Billis (Claire Bell and Douglas Russell) and the doomed romance between US Marine Joseph Cable and Bloody Mary’s daughter Liat (Tom Harrison and Rachel Campbell).

A production packed with memorable characters, romance, comedy, heartache, joy and classic songs such as ‘Some Enchanted Evening’ ‘I’m Gonna Wash that Man Right Outa My Hair’ ‘Bali Ha’i’ and ‘There is Nothin’ like A Dame’, makes Tweeddale’s only Musical Theatre company’s take on South Pacific is a must see show.

Performances start at 7.30pm, with the Saturday Matinee on April 5 at 2.15pm.
