INNERLEITHEN Pipe Band and St Ronan’s Silver Band played to a large crowd that had gathered on the High Street to enjoy almost an hour of musical entertainment. The Pipe Band, under the direction of Pipe Major Bruce Gillie, rendered a variety of stirring pipe sets, including Green Hills of Tyrol and The Battle’s o’er, Crags of Tumbledown Mountain, Lord Lovat’s Lament and Sruleen Park. Meanwhile, the Silver Band, conducted by Bandmaster David Robb, played a selection of tunes including Songs of the Lowlands, Bonnie Leithen Vale and Loch Lomond with a classy solo by principal cornet player Ian Aitchison. Both bands combined to perform the ever-popular “Highland Cathedral” which opened with a flawless solo from Pipe Major Bruce Gillie.
The Silver Band played the evening hymn tune, “St. Ann” before the massed bands marched off to the old favourite, “Scotland the Brave” with a promise of more superb music, provided by Innerleithen’s two bands at the Retreat on Games Saturday.
