SHOPPING in a discount store for a new flag at a historic spa has been ruled out by community councillors.
Instead members of Innerleithen Community Council will use crowdfunding to raise money for a new standard at St Ronan’s Wells.
The topic came up for discussion at Monday’s meeting of the council after Civic Trust chairman Ross McGinn wrote in a letter asking for help to replace the flag as it was in a poor state.
Paul Faris, the community council chairman, said: “It’s the saltire that’s flying at St Ronan’s Wells” and he joked: “Maybe we can buy a new one from Ali’s Bargain Basement Store for £2.99.
He added: “I am Ulsterman and extremely touchy on the issue of flags. Does the community council want to fund it or shall we draw it to the attention of the community?”
After a short discussion members agreed they should try to raise the money through crowdfunding.
