BORDERERS are being reminded to be aware of an HMRC telephone scam.

We reported last month that several elderly residents in Melrose had been targeted by ‘phantom debt’ calls.

A recorded message is left, allegedly from HMRC, stating they are bringing a lawsuit against the individual and is going to sue them.

The recipient is asked to phone 0161 8508494 and press “one” to speak to the officer dealing with the case.

Constable Nick Walker said: “This scam is becoming widely reported and seems to be targeting older people. Please do not reply to the message. Be very wary of cold calls, if in doubt, just hang up and never give out personal or financial information if you are unsure who you are dealing with.”
