EDUCATION bosses have been ordered to lend additional support to St Ronan's Primary School in Innerleithen.

Inspectors from Education Scotland found failings during a recent inspection.

And of the eight quality indicators across both the primary school and nursery, none scored above 'satisfactory' - indicating 'strengths just outweigh weaknesses'.

A spokesman for Education Scotland told us: "As a result of our inspection findings we think that the school needs additional support and more time to make necessary improvements.

"We will liaise with Scottish Borders Council regarding the school’s capacity to improve.

"We will return to carry out a further inspection of the school within 12 months."

The school's headteacher Keith Belleville along with education bosses at the local authority have been tasked with inproving leadership as well as self-evaluation.

They have also been told to raise expectations of what pupils can achieve.

And to improve monitoring of children's progress.

Inspectors, who met with parents, carers and pupils as well as the headteacher and staff, also identified strengths within the school, including the well-established links with the community and a commitment to promoting the school as a hub of learning activities for children and their families.

They also found the pupils to be courteous, confident and motivated during their visit.

Headteacher Mr Belleville told us: “We are pleased that the recent inspection of our school highlighted its strong position as a hub of learning within the local community.

"We are also extremely proud of our children who display our shared values through their daily interactions, not only during the inspection, but throughout the year.

"The inspection team agreed with our own self-evaluation of the school’s current strengths and planned improvements.

"We have already started to prioritise and work on the specific areas as identified during the inspection."

The school's parents group has vowed to work with teachers to help improve the St Ronan's next report card.

Chair Dominic Finn said: “The whole school worked extremely hard to demonstrate to the inspection team the many strengths of St Ronan’s.

"This is the same effort and commitment they put into teaching and learning every day, and explains why it is a school which the staff and pupils should rightly be proud of.

"The Parent Partnership is committed to representing the views of parents and carers and will work in collaboration with the staff throughout the process of continuous improvement.”
