THE father of retiring Dux Boy Alexander Paterson revealed the Games Week introduced them to neighbours they had never met before - despite living in Innerleithen for years.

James Paterson praised the way in which the festivities brought the community together in Innerleithen.

He was speaking following one of the highlights of a week-long series of events to celebrate the town’s history, the Cleikum Ceremonies, on Friday.

James said: “I think it brings the whole community together. We met neighbours last year, putting up bunting and putting up signs, which we possibly hadn’t met before.

“We had about 150 people in our back garden this day and next last year and the sense of warmth towards Alexander was fantastic.

“And, over the last year, he has continued to carry out his duties. Last Sunday he was in the church speaking to the entire community and tonight (Friday) he delivered a very short speech but we’re very proud of him.” Alexander, who represented St Ronan this year, has also played the role of the Lantern Bearer in 2009. Next stop Standard Bearer?

“I think he has his eyes on that,” James admitted. “His little sister is called Lucy, she is five and a half, and she stood up when the Sash Girls came into the hall tonight so I think she has her cards definitely marked.”
