IT is one of the most photogenic spectacles in the country.

And organisers of the Beltane Festival are yet again looking for the photograph which best captures the spirit of the celebrations.

In 2011 the Peebles March Riding & Beltane Queen Festival Committee introduced the competition in memory of keen photographer and long-time member, Sandy Smith.

As well as The Sandy Smith Memorial Trophy there are also smaller runners-up awards.

Committee secretary George Blair told us: "This is a competition open to anyone – young or old, amateur or professional, and must be a photograph on a Beltane theme – showing the Spirit of Beltane during the current year’s Festival.

"Just as last year, we are hugely indebted to Ian McLeod of Elmbank Printing in Elcho Street Brae, who has once again agreed to accept the entries on our behalf."

Last year's winner was popular local barber Stephen Mathison, who went on to become the official Beltane Festival photographer.

To follow in Stephen's shoes submit entries - a maximum of two files per email - to elmbank1@btconnect.com

Entrants should include their name, age, address and telephone/email contact details.

Alternatively, hard copies can be posted or handed in to Elmbank with the same contact details written on the rear of the photograph.

Mr Blair added: "The winning images, and any other photos of interest, will become the property of the Beltane Committee and may be used in support of the festival in the future."

The closing date for entries is Friday, August 18.
