A CARD design by Halyrude pupil Jaymie Donaldson has won over a pack of burly rugby players.

Props, hookers and flankers at Biggar Rugby Club were given the task of choosing the winning design of MP David Mundell's Christmas card competition.

And it was Jaymie's festive furry creature which caught the eye of the Hartree Mill hard men.

The talented young artist from Peebles was presented with the first prize of a bike this week by the Secretary of State for Scotland.

Mr Mundell told us: "I was delighted to be at Halyrude Primary in Peebles, to present Jaymie with her prize of a bike.

"The standard this year in the annual competition was extremely high, so I was not envious of the players at Biggar Rugby Club who had to pick the winner."

Mr Mundell's competition was open to all schoolchildren across Tweeddale and Clydesdale.

And, following sponsorship from Scottish Power, a mountain bike was on offer for the best design.

Mr Mundell added: "Presenting the prize to the winner of my Christmas card competition is one of the highlights of my job and I could see how happy Jaymie was with her prize when I handed it over.

"I thank all of the youngsters who took the time in across schools in Tweeddale and Clydesdale to enter the competition and it is clear that there are a lot of budding young artists in our schools.

"I hope Jaymie enjoys her prize of a bike very much."
