A MAN responsible for killing a woman in Peebles last year has been convicted.

At the Glasgow High Court today (Thursday, May 31), Nicolas Rogers was found guilty of the murder of Alexandra Stuart.

Officers were called to an address in Cuddyside at around 11.20am on Sunday, August 6, 2017 following reports of an assault, where 22-year-old Alexandra, known as Alex, was found seriously injured within.

She was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh where she sadly passed away later that evening.

A major investigation was launched and 27-year-old Rogers was apprehended at a car park near to Tesco in Peebles a short time after the incident.

He will now be sentenced next month.

Detective Chief Inspector Stuart Reid from Lothians and Scottish Borders CID said: "Nicolas Rogers subjected Alex Stuart, a well-known and much liked postwoman within Peebles, to a significant level of violence that ultimately resulted in her death.

"Following the attack he fled the scene but was apprehended as a result of excellent work by local officers and vital assistance from the public.

"A substantial body of evidence was built up against Rogers, demonstrating his responsibility for Alex's death and this has been pivotal in securing today's conviction.

"I'd like to thank all of those involved in this investigation for their dedication and professionalism throughout.

"Finally, I wish to extend my sympathies to Alex's family and thank them for their support of our inquiries during what was undoubtedly, a very distressing time for them.

"I hope this outcome brings them some sense of closure so they can begin to move on with their lives."
