Scottish Labour’s deputy leader rallied referendum No voters in Peeblesshire last week.

Anas Sarwar joined teams of local activists in Peebles and Galashiels as part of his nationwide ‘battle bus’ tour of Scotland.

The MP fielded a range of questions from local residents on issues including currency, the National Health Service and more powers for the Scottish Parliament.

Mr Sarwar was keen to stress the benefits of the UK to those living and working in the Scottish Borders He highlighted the strength of the pound and the region’s close economic and social ties with friends and neighbours in the North of England.

Mr Sarwar said: “The battle bus had two fantastic stops in Peebles and Galashiels today, with a great response on the doors.

“It’s clear from speaking to local people that they are saying No thanks to separation.

“People in the Borders know that being part of the UK is best for jobs, with Scottish businesses selling twice as much to the rest of the UK than we do to the rest of the world combined. And best for schools and hospitals with more money to spend on services we value because we are part of the UK.

“Borderers don’t have to choose between Scotland and the UK, they know we can have the best of both worlds. A strong Scottish Parliament with new powers guaranteed but still being backed up by the strength and security of the UK and the pound.”
