ORGANISERS of Peebles’ impressive Christmas lights have been boosted by the announcement of further financial help.

The town’s Callants Club has pledged to cover the cost of the electricity to power the lights in the future.

“This is great news for us and it means it will allow us to plough more money into maintaining and repairing the display each year,” said David Elder, the chairman of the Christmas Lights committee.

“Without the support of the Callants we would have still had the lights but they would not have been as good as they are.

“In the last few years our Christmas lights as well as other towns in the Borders have had to be changed due to demands from Scottish Borders Council.

“We have had to move everything over to LED and the council has asked us to pay for our own electricty which would have meant additional fundraising required to cover the extra costs.

“Peebles Callants Club have always been big supporters of the town’s lights over the years with members turning out to help erect and dismantle the lights and making donations.” Mr Elder praised other local organisations that have helped, including health spa Stobo Castle which has extended its sponsorship of the Christmas lights until 2019.
