No-one would blame bosses at Peebles for casting envious eyes in the direction of Selkirk where their former coach has an impeccable record.

But to their credit they are refusing to be too downcast over the success of Peter Wright at their Borders rivals.

While unbeaten Selkirk are preparing for a new campaign amongst the elite in the BT Premiership, Peebles are languishing in mid-table and facing up to another season in Division One. But officials at the Gytes are refusing to think about what might have been had Wright stayed with them.

“Different clubs have different strengths and weaknesses and the bottom line is that the decision was made to part company with Peter,” said senior director of rugby Graeme Paterson. “We are reasonably happy with what we have achieved - though at times the season has been frustrating. You have to congratulate Peter and Selkirk for what they have done. We wish them well for their foray into the Premiership next season.” Paterson insisted that coaches Drew Moore and Gavin Kerr will remain in their posts for another season at least.

“Drew and Gavin have done a good job,” he said. “They have contributed well to the development of the team and we are in a better position now than we were 12 months ago. Coaches have to be given two seasons to show what they are capable of, so we are only half way there with regards to this coaching team.” Peebles travel to Selkirk for their next game - on March 7 - before concluding their campaign against second-top Stewart’s Melville.

The red and whites could not have two more difficult fixtures as they try to bounce back from a 47-5 humbling at the hands of Watsonians.

It was a miserable afternoon in Edinburgh with Peebles scoring just one try in the first period and failing to add to their points total in the second half.

“We had a bad day and didn’t perform in certain areas - we allowed them to play to their strengths and use their speed on the outside. Their guys exploited the gaps and got away with pure pace.” Paterson is hoping that the break will freshen a few tired limbs before they attempt to bring the Selkirk juggernaut to a halt.

“We gave them a good game at the Gytes and they know that everybody wants to be the first team to beat them,” said Paterson.

“It’s difficult in a way for them as everybody will be expecting them to win - but I’d rather be in their position!

“They are a very good team - the league table doesn’t lie - and I don’t know whether that extra week’s break will improve our chances.” “It is one of two tough games to finish our season but there’s no reason why we shouldn’t perform well in this one and the next game if the guys take notice of what we tell them.”
