A BIRD from the Borders ensured that there was at least one home win at the largest one day poultry show in Scotland.

The handsome African gander, owned by Glenn Keay and Hazel Sterricks of Peebles, beat off strong competition to win the prize for the best goose at the show.

He was among 1,416 entries at the annual championships of the Peebles Poultry and Bantam Club held at the Community Centre, Walkershaugh, Peebles.

Organisers of the event hailed it as the most successful ever with exhibitors coming for the first time from Northern Ireland.

It was one of the more familiar faces at the show - an exhibitor from Aspatria, Cumbria - that took top honours.

The stunning old English game pullet, owned by H Shanklin, was judged overall show champion after first winning the hard feather bantam section.

Club chairman Davy Cuthbertson and show secretary Hazel Dickson told the Peeblesshire News: “This show was quite possibly the best show yet that we have hosted in the 30 years of the club.

“We would like to extend our thanks to the committee and volunteers who put in lots of hard work as a great team particularly in the building and dismantling of the show over show weekend.” There were over 50 breeds in attendance – every breed of every shape, size and colour – showcasing the best of exhibition poultry and waterfowl in the UK.
