FILMMAKERS have been lured by Peebles’ old world charm and chosen the town as a location for a major movie about a 19th century golfer and his son.

The producers of Tommy’s Honour are planning to send camera crews to Peebles on Thursday, August 20 to shoot several scenes.

They have applied for permission for a road closure to allow them to film at shops on Northgate and Bridgegate.

In a letter sent to Peebles residents, location manager Ali Young said: “On behalf of the whole cast and crew we are very excited about coming to film in Peebles and are aware this is a quiet residential area.

“We will make every effort to keep the disruption to your daily lives to a minimum.” On being contacted by the Peeblesshire News Ms Young said: “I cannot comment any further on our visit to Peebles until the filming is completed.” Tommy’s Honour is an adaptation of a novel of the same name by Kevin Cook and is being directed by Jason Connery, the son of Scottish actor Sir Sean Connery.

Set in the 1800s, the film tells the story of the relationship between Tom Morris, a man dubbed as the godfather of Scottish golf, and his son Tommy.

Morris was the first greenkeeper at St Andrews Old Course and won the Open four times while his son remains the youngest winner of the Open at the age of 17.

Peter Mullan (Trainspotting, Sunshine on Leith, Stonemouth) will feature as Tom with Jack Lowden (The Tunnel, '71, Ghosts) playing Tommy.

The scene being filmed in Peebles will feature Tommy and his girlfriend, Meg, walking up Bridgegate to the corner and going into a shop.

In her letter Ms Young said they had requested a road closure from 6am till midnight on Bridgegate from the junction at Provost Walker Court to the junction with Northgate, and on Northgate from the junction with High Street.

Thursday is bin collection day and the producers have arranged for bins to be collected from the area at around 7am on the day of filming.

“It would be greatly appreciated if your bin could be collected from the street after the collection has happened,” said Ms Young.

“Access to your property will be maintained at all times, but you may be asked to wait for a minute or two while the camera is rolling.”
