Peebles High School pupils are being offered the perfect opportunity to learn more about Chinese culture and language.

This was the view of Education Secretary Fiona Hyslop as she visited Huiashao Secondary School in Nanxiang, Shanghai, earlier this week.

The school is developing links with PHS that will allow pupils from the two schools to learn more about each other"s countries and culture.

This school twinning takes place alongside Scotland"s network of eight Confucius Classroom Hubs, which provide a central point for pupils and communities to learn more about China.

As she delivered video greetings from Peebles pupils and participated in recording messages from Huiashao students to take back to Scotland, Ms Hyslop said: 'It"s great to experience the enthusiasm pupils can have for learning about other countries, their cultures and languages, which I have been able to see from pupils both in Peebles and Nanxiang.

'We want our young people to understand Scotland"s place in a globalised, multi-cultural society.

'That"s why we have opened eight Confucius Classroom Hubs across Scotland. These hubs offer fantastic opportunities for pupils to learn about all aspects of Chinese culture, including language, history, art, music and food.'

John Brown, Rector of Peebles High School, said: 'The link connecting our two schools will help forge a partnership between both of our ancient nations and peoples.

'In the future, the young people of Peebles High and Huaishao School will be offered opportunities in China and Scotland to develop their talents and aspirations as well as gaining an insight into each other"s cultures.

'Having Scotland"s Cabinet Secretary for Education & Lifelong Learning convey our wishes to Nanxiang on her visit to China gives both our schools a unique start on this journey of partnership and global citizenship.'
