WELCOME to Peebles! Tourists were greeted with a far from picture postcard image at the town"s biggest caravan park this week.
Bulldozers can be seen digging up Rosetta Caravan and Camping Park just as the summer tourist season gets underway.
One angry holidaymaker insisted he had to cancel a relaxing holiday with his grand-children because diggers had turned the idyllic beauty spot building site.
He claimed there were no signs warning of heavy machinery, a high-voltage electric cable was left exposed, and the park had become a health and safety hazard.
However, site owners Olympus Leisure insisted the caravan park was safe and work was currently ongoing to expand the site to keep up with demand from visitors holidaying at home this summer.
The company revealed it is building 10 new bases for static caravans to accommodate new and bigger vehicles. However, while four holidaymakers had to be relocated from their normal pitch, it pointed out work was restricted to weekdays to limit any disruption.
But Olympus Leisure refuted claims that the Rosetta Road park had become a health and safety hazard.
A spokesman said: 'We have seen more and more holidaymakers coming to Peebles for a break in the past year and we are committed to upgrading our facilities to keep up with demand.'
The park, which offers accommodation for touring caravans, motor vans and tents, has already taken on three new staff to cope with the surge in stay-at-home visitors avoiding the poor exchange rate abroad.
Rosetta Caravan and Camping Park is set in 47 acres of grounds surrounding a late Georgian mansion and, according to its website, staff endeavour to make the park as beautiful today as it was back in the early 19th Century when the house was constructed.
It boasts: 'The park is very spacious with plenty of room for children to play, or adults to just sit and relax. Our aim at Rosetta is to give you a quiet and relaxing holiday in beautiful surroundings which we feel we have accomplished by previously winning the Best Park in Scotland award.'
