FRAIL pensioners have been told to make their own way to hospital by bus bosses.
Dozens of elderly local residents rely on the First Bus town service 90 from the Eastgate to Hay Lodge Hospital.
But callous coach chiefs have now slashed the route - and claim construction workers have cluttered up Neidpath Car Park where the shuttle service turns.
Stranded pensioners are now left to walk from Young Street for their regular medical check-ups.
First Bus says it will only resume its full service when building materials for the new Kingsland school is cleared from the car park.
Peebles Community Council chairman Ian Wilson said: 'I went up to Neidpath Car Park only recently and counted over 17 contractors" vans and vehicles.
"This is a public car park and an area should be located within the site for construction vehicles.
'If only one elderly person is affected by this then it"s one person too many.'
The new £10 million Kingsland Primary School is due for completion in early December 2009.
A spokesperson for Scottish Borders Council said: 'We are in negotiation with First Bus about the issue and are looking at the reasons behind the problems. A number of parties have been storing equipment in the car park which, along with the cars parked there, could cause difficulties in turning a bus. We are looking at the options at the moment.'
