CARDRONA will face a further few years of waiting before action is taken to treat its smelly sewage system.
Villagers have complained to Scottish Water about pungent odours drifting from the nearby treatment centre.
But despite assurances from the utility supplier almost three years ago that corrective action would be taken, the problem lingers on.
And this week residents of the upmarket village were told that engineers won"t be on site for at least another couple of years.
Brian McCrow, chair of Cardrona Village Hall, told the Peeblesshire News: 'Why should we be subjected to foul odours when both young and old are taking their exercise?
'We want Scottish Water to get off the pot and fix this problem right now.'
Correction work on reed beds at Cardrona Waste water Treatment Works has now been scheduled in Scottish Water"s 2010-2014 investment period.
And locals haven"t been given any guarantees the job will even be completed within the timescale, as appropriate funding has yet to be secured.
Mr McCrow added: 'The area around the smelly reed beds is a favourite area for families walking in the evening and weekend and is right alongside the 13th fairway of Cardrona Golf Course.
'There are also plans to build a bike/pump track close to the sewage treatment works.'
Scottish Water issued appeals last year calling for 1,000 or so residents of Cardrona to stop flushing sanitary items such as nappies and cotton buds down the loo - claiming blockages were causing problems at the treatment works.
An action plan for odour management at the site is being created.
A Scottish Water spokesperson said: 'Previously raised odour issues within the network have already been addressed and we continue to monitor enquiries within the village.
'Because the local community continues to expand rapidly it has been necessary for Scottish Water to revisit our plans for the treatment of waste water in Cardrona.
"In line with the rest of the Borders, we are currently developing a scope of works to deliver tangible, long-term benefits for the community, improving the natural environment.'
