ANOTHER link in the chain of Tweeddale's proposed cycle network is all set for push off.

Work will begin on reopening the old railway tunnel beneath the A72 at Eshiels in October.

The scheme is a joint project between cycling charity Sustrans, and Scottish Borders Council, once opened the tunnel and track will become part of the National Cycle Network.

The railway line from Edinburgh to Galashiels through the Tweed Valley was closed in the 1950s.

And plans are already in place and approved for the reopening of the stretch of former railway line between Leadburn and Peebles.

This further stretch of track will allow members of the public a free and peaceful route all the way to Glentress.

And with work about to start on a major expansion of facilities at Glentress by Forestry Commission Scotland and a permanent uplift system being mooted for Innerleithen, it is hoped that Peeblesshire will become a top cycling tourist destination.

Sustrans project manager Jeremy Cunningham said: "We hope to begin work on reopening the tunnel in October with a finish date before March next year.

"There are a number of issues which need addressing in that time such as bats which now roost in the tunnel and utility pipes that also run across it.

"When the A72 was widened much of the soil was dumped into the tunnel and this will need excavating.

"The tunnel won't be reopened to its former width but to 2.4 metres, more than enough for walkers, cyclists and horseriders to pass through.

"This cycle network will be fantastic for the area allowing people to pass through the beautiful Tweed valley without having to deal with cars and traffic."

The news was also welcomed by local councillor and nearby resident, Catriona Bhatia, who included the scheme in her election manifesto.

She said: "It's great news that this tunnel is re-opening because it will offer walkers, cyclists and riders a traffic free route right through to Glentress from Leadburn, providing Glentress with added economic support from resulting tourism.

"It is my hope that this cycle path will act as a popular artery through Peeblesshire, allowing people to enjoy the beautiful scenery as they go."
