PARENTS of Halyrude pupils were recently shown plans for the refurbishment of the old Kingsland school building.

The site is to be refurbished for use by the new Halyrude Primary school in autumn 2010.

Due to Peebles' growing population, the existing Grade B-listed building which Halyrude pupils will move to, was no longer able to accommodate sufficient numbers of Kingsland pupils.

Therefore, a new £10 million Kingsland Primary School is being built at Neidpath Grazings which will comprise 14 classrooms.

The Neidpath Grazings site is due to be completed in early January 2010 and will accommodate up to 400 primary children.

When finished the newly refurbished Halyrude school will have 6 classes with the potential to expand to 8 classes so as to accommodate for any rise in its current 100 pupil roll.

Upon Halyrude taking up residence in the Kingsland building their old site will be disposed of by SBC's estates division.

Detailing the refurbishment plans a council spokesperson said: "The old Kingsland school is a listed building, so the intention is to change as little as possible, and return some parts such as the central light well to its former glory.

"The works will involve minor internal remodelling to improve the internal environment and will include replacing the heating and electrics, putting in a new kitchen and updating the fabric of the building e.g. paintwork, curtains etc."

Local councillor Catriona Bhatia said: "I'm glad to see this refurbishment work scheduled to begin, and the plans look really exciting.

"The building will be returned to its original Victorian state but with 21st century facilities.

"The last refurbishment of Kingsland took place in the 1970's when much of the classic aspects were covered over such as its atrium which is actually quite an architectural feature.

"Apart from the refurb and new facilities, Halyrude pupils will also benefit from a much larger playground and access to playing fields."
