CARDRONA may well be the luckiest loser in town after missing out in the People's Millions yet still receiving a cheque for £35,000.
The village lost a bid last week to secure funding from the People's Lottery to build a new 'pump n jump' bike track, after going head to head with a curling development group from Kelso.
And despite the fact that the Kelso group won the vote, the Cardrona project was the runner-up with the highest number of votes, securing the bike track the full £34,954 they initially applied for.
At a presentation in Peebles High School last Friday, Fiona Armstrong from ITV Border presented the cheque to the youth of Cardrona and congratulated them on their success.
The track, which is scheduled to be completed sometime in the new year, is a hybrid of a bmx and mountain bike track designed to allow youngsters to develop their cycling skills in a safe environment.
Ruaridh Cunningham, former Junior Downhill Mountain Biking World Champion, from Stow, said: "It's great that the pump n jump track got the money and will be able to be built.
"The track will be a great addition to the other biking facilities in the area. It's important that there are places like that where young people can go and have the opportunity to give cycling a go, as well as a spot for them to be able to hang out with their friends and ride their bikes without being moved on."
Brian McCrow, who helped organise the bid said: "Biking is very big in the Tweed Valley with Glentress and Innerleithen. This money will be of benefit to all Tweed Valley bikers and visitors, especially to the youth of Cardrona.
"It will develop their bike skills, improve their fitness and allow them to socialise with their friends in the fresh air.
"We'd like to thank everyone who voted for us, as well as the People's Millions and ITV Border."
