A RUBBISH rumpus has broken out in Walkerburn over an unsightly yard at the village's entrance.

Local councillors and community members have been equal in their condemnation of Eddie Fraser's builders yard at the side of the A72.

Locals began complaining after a skip that was left there became full to overflowing with various household goods and a three-piece suite of furniture.

Many felt the sight didn't reflect too fondly on the village, putting off visitors and tourists alike.

However, while Eddie, who has operated from the premises for many years, accepts that it doesn't look too good he feels it other villager's who are too blame for the rubbish.

He said: ""I've lived all my life in Walkerburn and I'm very approachable, I think the community council are just a bunch of spineless so and so's.

"I admit it's an eyesore but half of the stuff in the skip belonged to other villagers, who just came and dumped stuff like the three-piece suite in it during the middle of the night.

"I only got the skip so that I could clear away what mess I had left there."

Eddie has since cleared away the skip and a significant amount of the rubbish which had accumulated outside his workshop.

Community council secretary, Patricia Purves, welcomed this and feels that Eddie is basically a victim of his location.

She said: "He's cleared away the skip and what was there but it will all build up again in time.

"Where his yard's positioned is very visible and it looks dreadful for people entering Walkerburn.

"We have no problem with Eddie at all, he's a decent, hard-working guy but his yard is very untidy.

"We understand that it's unfair on him that other people just dump their stuff there but it's also unfair on the local community to have to put up with an eyesore at the village's main entrance.

"If he was on a side road there would be no problem but where he's based is so prominent."

Local councillor Gavin Logan said: " I 'm glad that every effort has been made to deal with this eyesore.

"It has a considerable visual impact and causes some offence in the village as well as giving a poor impression to visitors and to people driving through Walkerburn."
