The Caberston Farm site which could be line for a new knitwear shop and cafe.

PLANS are afoot to spin some new life into Walkerburn.

Local cashmere manufacturers, R & J Keddie have submitted plans for a knitwear workshop and cafe at Caberston Farm in the village.

The site, which has been empty for several years, is situated in a prominent location within the centre of Walkerburn.

And it is felt by locals that these plans could represent a much-needed shot in the arm for the village which has suffered from a lack of investment in recent years.

Walkerburn Community Council chairman, Steven Henderson said: "The community council is very keen on this proposal because something needs to go in there. It's been empty for too long.

"It's in a fantastic location right on the main road with ample parking. Hopefully this will help in getting tourists to stop in the village also.

"The site has been the subject of various proposals over the years such as a Shetland Pony Trek Centre or an antiques shop. It will a really good thing for Walkerburn if this is successful."

R & J Keddie have been manufacturing high quality designer knitwear under the name, Personal Cashmere, at their main unit just across the road from the site for the past 15 years.

Recently the family business branched out and started selling designer children's knitwear, blankets and gift sets via the internet.

Owner Raymond Keddie said: "Business is going well at present. We specialise in high-end designer cashmere and this area of the industry is thriving at the moment.

"Our personalised baby blankets are proving a real success.

"Hopefully our application is successful because it could really help revitalise Walkerburn as well as offering tourists and locals somewhere for coffee."
