PROGRESS seems to have been made regarding the deadly Leadburn Junction.

Scottish Borders Council wrote to Midlothian Council at the beginning of March pleading with them to make necessary safety improvements at the site as soon as possible.

Over the past decade four motorists have lost their lives around the Leadburn junction - where the A701, A703 and A6094 meet.

A £900,000 roundabout reached the planning stage following a 2006 crash which saw the nearby inn burned down and initial studies were completed.

However money to fund the project never materialised and the plans were shelved.

Scottish Borders Council this week received a letter from their counterparts at Midlothian Council in which they state that they 'intend to make further improvements this year."

The move was welcomed by local councillor Neil Calvert, although he did urge for further guarantees to be sought.

He said: "In the letter there is no certainty from Midlothian Council about what they are offering to do at Leadburn. That's why I am demanding a meeting with them so that we can guarantee satisfactory improvements."

Midlothian Council refused to be drawn on any planned improvements when asked.

A spokesman said: "We have been discussing routine maintenance as part of our annual update including a meeting with Howgate Community Council and we have also been discussing this junction with colleagues in Scottish Borders as it is close to the border between authorities."
