A CONTROVERSIAL plan for Cardrona's first pub has been approved by the council.
Scottish Borders Council (SBC) has given the green light for a bar, restaurant and function suite to be built near the site of the village store.
The development will also include eight new flats and two houses, along with an extension to the existing cafe.
The planning application was submitted by local businessman and farmer Tom Renwick, who created the original Cardrona village in 2000.
Residents have long complained that there is nowhere to enjoy a quiet drink in Cardrona, but the new facilities have met with a mixed response from villagers.
SBC received four letters of objection, with people citing concerns about increases in traffic and noise pollution, along with fears that digging work on the site may trigger flooding.
Brian McCrow, Chairman of the Cardrona Village Hall conducted a survey amongst residents to gauge their reactions.
He told the Peeblesshire News: "Whilst many residents are in favour of the proposal there were still a number of concerns raised, including the shortage of parking spaces and their position near the cycle path which may cause health and safety concerns for walkers and cyclists.
"Residents also feel that this development may be the straw that breaks the camel's back in terms of the extra demands it will make on the already overloaded sewage plant."
However, Mr Renwick maintains that it was the residents themselves that asked him to consider building the bar complex.
"Over the years I have been asked to provide a bar and bistro many times.
"My attitude to the whole Cardrona project has been to listen to any objections and consider them carefully. I've tried very hard over the years to create not just a village, but also a community.
"I've been repeatedly asked to provide a village pub and bistro so that's what I'm doing. On the whole the plan has been very well received in Cardrona."

There's been talk of this in the village for a while and I can't wait as I think it will be a tremendous boost for the life and heart of the community. Well done to those involved, and thank you.

The whole 'village' and hotel is a carbuncle in a beautiful part of Tweed-dale. None of it should ever have got planning permission!
