THE sun shone from a cloudless sky over Peebles on Wednesday afternoon - and the Beltane Queen for 2010 wore a sunny smile as the weeks of waiting ended at 3pm.
Alana Craigmile looked shocked, but excited, as her name was read by Sandra McGregor, Headteacher of Priorsford School, to a packed Drill Hall.
Next applause rang out as Cornet-Elect Fin Barber presented Alana with her Beltane Queen sash.
Inside the hall, Alana was congratulated by Fin and his Lass, Jo Cassidy, as well as his supporters and their lasses, Gareth Harrison and Laura Robson and Colin and Katy Noble.
Joining the congratulations were the lady who will crown Alana on hopefully an equally sunny Beltane Saturday, Catherine Hamilton, and Warden of the Cross Kirk, Barry Hughes.
Outside parents and friends had to wait another 20 minutes before the queen emerged into the sunshine and a rapturous Beltane welcome.
Alana, who is 12, attends Priorsford Primary School and is very sporty - she loves a whole range of sports such as netball, golf, swimming and hockey.
She lives in Cademuir Drive with mum and dad, Fiona and Mark.
She told the Peeblesshire News: "I was a bit nervous but very excited also. I'm delighted to be selected and I'm really looking forward to the Beltane"
After being introduced to her public, Alana was next pulled through the town in a small carriage pulled by Cornet-Elect Fin and his supporters to Tweed Green.
Fin said: "I'm really honoured to have undertaken one of my first obligations as Cornet-Elect. It's great that all the kids get to be involved and play a part in the Beltane because that's what it's all about, the whole community being involved.
"This is the start of the Beltane and I'm really looking forward to my installation now."
