PEEBLES' very own taloned terror has swooped once more on an unsuspecting jogger.

Holidaymaker John Cowan, 46, of Falkirk, was enjoying a peaceful family holiday in Peebles when he decided to go for a lunchtime run along Kingsmeadows Road last Thursday July 8.

But on his return route he was attacked by a buzzard and left bloodied and terrified.

Over twenty people have reported being attacked by the bird at the same spot over the past four weeks and the incidents shown no sign of abating.

Last week we reported that local councillor Gavin Logan called for signage to be erected at the site to warn of the attacks.

A warning John would have heeded if he had known.

The dad of three said: "I really cannot believe it, I thought this kind of stuff only happened in films. I was on my way back from my run when I felt it swooshing past my head.

"It then returned and sank its talons into my head, I could feel it grabbing my scalp.

"I picked up a stick and attempted to fend it off and eventually made it back to where I was staying at Kingsmeadows House. It would have struck me again only for I had dropped my keys and bent down to pick them up.

"At the time all I could think was, 'Is this really happening to me? It was only afterwards that I learned of the prior attacks, if i'd known i would have gone nowhere near the bird."

A fortnight ago, sports agent, Scott McDonald, suffered several cuts after the bird sunk its talons into his head.

And mum of one, Sarah Connor, suffered such a prolonged attack she was led to seek sanctuary in nearby woods, only escaping when she flagged down a passing motorist.

Councillor Gavin Logan said: "This is a matter of public safety because these attacks are increasing in number. These birds will return to nest at this site each year so signage isn't such a bizarre idea.

"If a child was attacked god only knows the injuries this bird could inflict. I am at present making enquiries at the council as to the likelihood of signage being erected."

Experts say the birds, which have a 4ft wingspan, are more than likely protecting their chicks which are about to fledge.

James Reynolds of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds said: "It is extremely uncommon for a buzzard to attack a person. We would recommend avoiding the area for a few weeks until the young have left."
