Loretta having her dress mended by her guardian angel Alex
A BRIDE from Biggar has asked for help to trace the lady who saved her big day.
Loretta Atkinson was all set to marry her partner of seven years, Steven Ward, at Peebles Registry Office, when she tripped as she got out the wedding car.
Thinking everything was fine, Loretta was about to make her way into the ceremony when a passing stranger stopped her as she crossed the road - to tell her she had ripped the back of her wedding dress.
But as luck would have it the stranger turned out to be a seamstress, and set about sewing the dress in the middle of the street!
Loretta told the Peeblesshire News: “After I tripped I thought everything was fine, I had no idea I’d torn it.
“The wedding car was quite small and my dress was quite big so I think I must have put my high heel through the lace as I got out.
“This lady just stopped me and said 'I hope you don’t mind me telling you but your dress has a big rip - but don’t worry I’m a seamstress’ - I couldn’t believe my luck.
“She just whisked a little box out of her bag and started mending the tear - it took about ten minutes and looked as good as new.”
Meanwhile, inside the registry office poor Steven was getting anxious that his now rather late bride wasn’t going to turn up at all.
Loretta, 40, said: “Thankfully the registrar let it slip that I’d torn my dress and was outside, which must have been a relief for Steve as he told me later he’d been getting worried I wasn’t going to come.”
And with all the drama, Loretta said she never got the chance to properly thank the mystery sewer for fixing her dress.
“After the lady fixed my dress I thanked her and gave her a big hug and she gave me a little pin as my something borrowed. She wished me luck and then was gone as quickly as she’d arrived.
“It was so bizarre the way everything happened - to rip your wedding dress like that and then the only person around is a seamstress. She was like my guardian angel.”
The rest of the day went without a hitch and Steve and Loretta had a great reception back at their garden in Biggar, but hairdresser Loretta says she hopes someone knows who the mysterious seamstress is so she can show her appreciation.
“All I know about this lady is that her name is Alex. I don’t even know if she is local as she told me I couldn’t rip the dress again as she was about to leave for London.
“If anybody recognises her from the picture or knows who she is I’d love them to get in touch so I can send her a big bunch of flowers and tell her how grateful I am.”
If anyone knows who Alex is then they can get in touch with the Peeblesshire News and we will pass her details on to Loretta.
