POLICE are looking to prosecute robbers to the full letter of the law after a break-in at Walkerburn Post Office.

The Galashiels Road shop was entered through a back window in the early hours of Monday August 9.

However, the hapless thieves immediately triggered an alarm upon entering the premises before fleeing empty handed through a front window.

Eric Lavender, who has run the post office with his wife, Evelyn, for the past three years, lives above the shop.

He said: “We were awoken by the alarm at 2.30am but when we got downstairs they were long gone.

"They entered the shop by climbing a ladder at the back and clambering through a rather small window. I’d guess whoever was involved it is either a young lad or a small man.

"Thankfully the alarm scared them off and they left with nothing. It’s just a pity that they had to break the window to leave.”

A police spokesman said: “About 2.15am on Monday August 9, intruders entered the Post Office in Galashiels Road, Walkerburn, and triggered the alarm. It is believed this disturbed them, and they fled the scene without stealing anything of value. We would like to hear from anyone with any information regarding this crime.”

Police are also on the lookout for bike thieves after a black Narco mountain bike frame was stolen from an address in Victoria Park Drive, Peebles between 10am on Monday August 9 and 7.55pm on August 10.

Between 6pm on Thursday July 29 and 4pm Friday July 30, crooks also made off with a green Felt mountain bike from Dalatho Crescent.

Vandals are also being sought after the rear window of a Mitsubishi Shogun and the windscreen of a Nissan Primera were smashed whilst parked unattended in Glensax Road, Peebles, beween midnight and 10am on Sunday August 8.

A white male, aged 18-24, 5’8’’ tall, blonde hair, slim build, wearing a white dress shirt, and black dress trousers was seen acting suspiciously in the area. Police are appealing for information.
