TRAQUAIR residents have been left stumped after being lumbered with 20 tonnes of timber.
The huge pile of wood was dumped at the roadside near the village hall around two weeks ago, and no-one knows where the wood has come from or who it belongs to.
Concerned residents have written to Scottish Borders Council (SBC) in an attempt to identify the mystery owner, but so far investigations have drawn a blank.
One local resident, who asked not to be named, told the Peeblesshire: “These huge logs on the side of the road are a disgrace.
“Children from the village have been playing on them, and if just one of these logs were to slip they could be killed. It’s dangerous, and most likely illegal, and whoever left them there should be made to move them immediately before there is a serious accident.”
And local Councillor Gavin Logan agrees, he said: “I’m looking into this matter to try and resolve who owns the wood. It is simply not acceptable to just dump materials like this, and especially in such quantities, at the side of the road.”
A spokesperson for SBC said they believe the logs do not pose a risk. “One of our community wardens has been out to inspect the matter, and he was satisfied that the logs were safely stacked.
"At the moment there is no plan to take any further action, but we will continue to closely monitor the situation.”
