EXCITING High Street plans have been served up for one of Peebles’ landmark buildings.

Chef Kenny Coltman has submitted proposals for a delicatessen and restaurant to be built on the site of what was Whitie’s newsagents and bookshop.

Kenny bought the impressive property from Douglas and Sheila Whitie, who closed the doors of the popular family run business only a fortnight ago.

Originally from Peebles, Kenny stands down from his current role as Executive Head Chef at the Caledonian Hilton, in Edinburgh, this September.

His plans for the site involve converting the High Street shop into a delicatessen and installing a restaurant in place of the bookshop at the rear.

Kenny said: “I’m delighted to return to where I grew up and went to school. This is a really exciting project in a prime High Street location and landmark building.

“I think our business will fit nicely into Peebles High Street, which has a good buzz about it this year as opposed to past years.

“As yet we’ve no real idea what area of the market we’re going to aim at, we’ll just have to see what the locals want. We’ll defintely be using the best local produce in all our food though.”

The B listed property has stood on the High Street in various guises since medieval times, when a castle sat at the west end of the High Street where the Old Parish Church now stands.

This building which became exclusively known as Whitie’s was originally formed from outbuildings of this castle.

And the first retail shop at the site was opened in one of these old outbuildings by bookseller Sandy Elder in 1791.

Scottish Borders Council will now rule on the submitted planning application in the coming months.
