PEEBLES' boy racers have been warned by police that they face a zero tolerance clampdown on their antics.
Kingsmeadows residents have long complained about a number of young drivers roaring around the area, blaring loud music and revving their engines.
As a result, local police officers have for the past number of months been targeting Kingsmeadows Car Park assisted by their road policing colleagues but this has done little to reduce the number of complaints.
It was hoped by officers that through education and enforcement, issues such as loud exhausts, careless or inconsiderate driving, excessively loud music and loitering would be tackled.
But at last Thursday’s Peebles Community Council meeting, PC Craig Rogerson stated that the gloves were now off.
He said: “It’s now time for serious action to be taken. We have too many complaints on our computer regarding this problem in the Kingsmeadows area.
“What we request is for members of the public to provide us with the number plates of any car they see racing around the area and we will act upon it.
“With the statements of just two witnesses, we can put a charge together and obtain a banning order from the area or even seize the vehicle.”
David Pye, chair of Peebles Community Council said: “Numerous local residents have complained about young drivers roaring in and out of Kingsnmeadows Car Park and police have been informed more than once.
“They use it like a racetrack almost every Friday and Saturday night and it’s about time that something was done. I’m glad action is finally to be taken.”
