Leadburn safety work to start

AN Agreement has finally been reached between Scottish Borders and Midlothian Councils to improve safety at the notorious Leadburn Junction.
The improvements at the junction, which connects the A701/A703/A6094 are set to start in late September and be completed in November.
The junction, which is in Midlothian but is close to the boundary with Scottish Borders Council (SBC), has been the subject of intense political wrangling between the two councils with neither claiming responsibility for making the necessary improvements.
The accident black spot has been the scene of a number of serious crashes over the years, two of which have proven fatal.
Councillor Russell Imrie, Cabinet portfolio-holder for strategic services in Midlothian, said: “These improvements are part of our planned regular maintenance and are a good example of joined-up thinking between councils. Disruption for drivers will be kept to a minimum with traffic lights operating to protect both motorists and roadworkers.”
And Councillor Jim Fullarton of SBC, echoed his Midlothian colleague’s sentiments, he said: “Very soon those travelling between the Borders and Midlothian will benefit from these road safety improvements. Both authorities take road safety issues seriously and we’re confident motorists will see the benefits of these improvements.”
The work by SBC will start on September 27 and involves the replacement of lost, stolen or damaged road signs close to the junction.
Midlothian Council is concentrating on improving lighting at the junction, some limited realignment of kerbs and the replacement of elements of a high-friction surfacing area, which is expected to take place in November depending on weather conditions.
Local MSP Jeremy Purvis who has long campaigned on this issue said: “Whilst the work that will be carried out falls short of an engineered round about, the lighting, curb and signage improvements will enhance the safety of the junction.
"The announcement by the council comes after a long campaign by me, supporting Howgate and Peebles Community Councils.
"In particular, the constructive and practical proposals by the Howgate community that the light pursued this year will be acted upon.
"I continue to press the Scottish Government to reverse its decision on the longer term solution, but I pay tribute to the persistence of the community, which has resulted in the councils now acting.
“We agreed at the meeting that we would continue to work closely together on this important issue.”
