Danny Fitzsimons appeared from custody on Wednesday - and if convicted, could face the death penalty.
Mr McGuigan, who was about to become a dad for the second time, was later buried in his hometown of Peebles.
The 37-year-old's popularity was evident by the large turn out at his funeral.
Fitsimmons is alleged to have shot dead both of his security colleagues before wounding guard Arkan Mahdi Saleh.
Written testimonies from three fellow security contractors were read out during the opening day's hearing - they said they witnessed the three security workers drinking and quarrelling inside one of the caravans where they lived.
The case was adjourned until January 23.
