Osso head chef Ally McGrath

FOULMOUTHED chef Gordon Ramsay is out and Peebles' very own kitchen wizard Ally McGrath is in - that's the verdict from the world's most famous food guide.

The latest Michelin Guide hit the streets this week and whilst the famously foul-mouthed chef's London restaurant Foxtrot Oscar has been ditched, Peebles eaterie Osso is enjoying its first inclusion in the fabled guide.

The Innerleithen Road establishment is the only Scottish restaurant to be added this year.

Osso has been awarded Bib Gourmand status - an accolade given to establishments that serve first class food whilst still representing value for money.

Across the whole of the UK just 117 restaurants can boast such an award.

The Michelin Guide, which operates the famous star rating for restaurants throughout the world, is considered the pinnacle of food awards, with inclusion in the guide gaining restaurants and their chefs celebrity status.

And the guide's editor in chief Rebecca Burr, thinks it is restaurants like Osso that are best placed to survive the recession.

She commented: "There is no doubt that 2010 was a difficult year but those hotels and restaurants that represented value for money, at whatever price, were the ones best placed to weather the storm.

"We found twelve new one-star restaurants but also awarded 26 new Bib Gourmands, which our readers particularly appreciate for their moderate prices."

Allan Bone, Managing Director of the company behind Osso, told the Peeblesshire News: "We are all obviously delighted to receive this fantastic and unexpected accolade.

"Ally is a very dedicated chef and his focus on using fresh daily products to cook everything from scratch has paid off. Our regular customers appreciate the quality and value that our seasonal and daily changing menus provide.

"It is team work and all the staff in the kitchen and front of house also need to be congratulated."
