Sewage solution for Cardrona
CARDONA'S longstanding pongy problem looks to finally be flushed following the news of £500,000 investment in its waste water works.
Villagers have long complained to Scottish Water about pungent odours drifting from the nearby treatment centre.
But despite assurances from the utility supplier over four years ago that corrective action would be taken, the problem has lingered on.
However this week Scottish Water confirmed that the problem will now be addressed in this financial year through a joint venture partnership between themselves and one of the world's leading construction, engineering and water companies, Solutions.
Solutions Construction Manager for the Cardrona investment Mark Keast said: "This is a significant investment for this community, which is just over 1300 strong. The project which is getting underway will improve the long-term performance of the works and improve the natural environment of this majestic river for many years to come."
The £500,000 project which is to be implemented before the end of the summer will involve: Constructing a new inlet pumping station.
The previous pumping station was damaged by the rising water table during periods of extreme rainfall. Improvements at the works will remove this ground water from the treatment equation, also improving the energy efficiency of the facility.
Modifications to improve the distribution of flows will also be undertaken as part of the investment to further improve the performance of the works.
Local councillor Gavin Logan has tirelessly campaigned for this investment since 2007.
He said: "I am delighted that Scottish Water has finally grasped the nettle after years of pressure from Cardrona's residents.
"In the four years that I have been a councillor I have received a good number complaints about the smell from in and around Cardrona and it is great to see this long awaited upgrade now taking place."
Cardrona Village Hall chair Brian McCrow also welcomed the news and said: "Cardrona residents are very pleased that Scottish Water has finally enhanced the sewage works.
"We have campaigned since 2007, residents, golfers and visitors have complained over the years about the smell from the reed beds so we hope this work will at last give us a sweet smelling village.
"Councillor Logan was instrumental in persuading Scottish Water so many thanks are due to him and his Scrutiny Panel at SBC."
