A LOCAL playgroup which had been threatened with closure has taken a giant step towards safety.
Rosetta Playgroup had just four weeks to enrol 20 children to keep it from closing back in January which led staff and members of the management committee to immediately launch a grassroots campaign aimed at securing the much-needed enrolment.
Thanks to their efforts they attracted the required number of kids and already have 15 on the waitng list for the next session.
And this week they received another significant boost when councillors at Wednesday's Executive meeting unanimously approved their lease for new premises alongside Halyrude Primary at Rosetta Road in August.
The group, which caters for kids aged 2 to 4 years old, will now vacate its current home in the rundown scout hut at Dean Park to new premises within the old Kingsland buildings.
management committee Gaye Brown said: "We're delighted to have secured the lease. The playgroup's future looked pretty bleak in January but now we have 15 kids secured for August and this should increase over the holidays.
"However we still need the community's support as we need to riase funds for remedial works within the new premises."
Local councillor Catriona Bhatia said: "It's fantastic that this lease has been approved. "Rosetta Playgroup is a much-needed resource in the town and it would have been a great shame if it had been lost. The group's future now looks a lot more secure."
