Walkway work welcomed
IT has been a contentious issue in Peebles - but it looks like there is finally light at the end of the Top Cop walkway.
The wooden walkway was built last year to provide better access to the Parish Church, but was deemed too steep to comply with building regulations, so has never been opened to the public.
However, a solution has finally been found and builders began work this week, with the walkway scheduled to open by the end of July.
The work involves installing a number of flat sections along the length of the structure, to lessen the gradient and make it safer for users.
Roger Trueman, Property Convenor for the Old Parish Church, said: "This is really good news.
"The structure will remain in place, but the handrail and the decking will be removed and rebuilt in line with the amended building warrant we've now been granted.
"Once the work is completed the walkway will comply fully with all building regulations, and should open next month.
"This will be great for the people who use the church - the ramp won't just benefit wheelchair users, but also mums with buggies and prams and elderly people, as they'll no longer have to use the steep steps at the front of the church."
