WORK on Peebles High School's much-needed sports hall looks set to be brought forward by a year.
The long-awaited announcement, which is sure to be welcomed by parents staff and pupils, follows a proposal made by local Councillor Neil Calvert at a meeting of Scottish Borders Council's Administration Policy Working Group on Wednesday.
He requested that money from the 2013/14 budget be allocated to carry out the work.
The local authority's depute leader and finance spokesman's motion was unanimously supported and will now be referred to the full Executive for approval.
Councillor Calvert said: "I am greatly pleased that my proposal to get work underway, a year ahead of schedule, has been supported. Hopefully the matter will be fully formalised when it appears before the Executive this year.
"Peebles High School, as the biggest high school in the region, deserves better facilities that what it has and should be seen as a top priority."
Plans have been in place for a state-of-the art games hall, full-sized all-weather pitch, sprint track, long jump pit and fitness suite since 2009.
However, plans to build the facility have been regularly pushed back following a squeeze in government spending.
It is the only secondary school in the Borders that can't offer Higher PE courses.
The current games hall has been out of action since last September due to problems with a leaking roof and pupils must travel to the Gytes for PE lessons - an arrangement slammed by HMIe inspectors during their recent visit to the school.
