Erosion at Tweed Bridge

A CRACK in Tweed Bridge is forcing Scottish Borders Council to deploy specialist divers.
However, they won't take the plunge until next year, when a team will take to the river to examine a crack in the central column below the water line.
It is suspected that the crack is a result of erosion.
The bridge is currently the only vehicular crossing of the Tweed in Peebles, and the latest damage will further strengthen the case for a second bridge.
A report commissioned last year by Scottish Borders Council stated that a second crossing was vital to the economic future of Peebles, and the town's community council have refused to support any further housing developments south of the Tweed until a new bridge is put in place.
Councillor Catriona Bhatia said: "The council are obviously satisfied that there are no immediate issues with the bridge, but I'm glad they plan to look at the whole structure next year.
"However, on-going maintenance of the bridge is vital as it is the only link from the North to the South of the town and vice-versa.
A spokesperson for Scottish Borders Council said: "There are no immediate plans to inspect Tweed Bridge with divers. We expect the diving inspection programme, across a number of Borders bridges, to take place next year."
