Another smash at Leadburn

THE notorious Leadburn junction claimed more victims this week after a horrific four car smash.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene just after 5.30pm on Tuesday evening to find four cars had collided at the junction of the A701/A703/A6094.
A heavy rescue tender had to be brought from Newcraighall Fire Station in Edinburgh to recue a 51-year-old Chinese woman who was trapped in the Volkswagen Golf she was a passenger in.
She was taken by ambulance to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, where she is being treated for serious spinal injuries. The car's three other occupants, also Chinese nationals, were taken to the hospital but their injuries are not thought to be serious.
Three other cars involved in the collision were damaged but none of the occupants needed hospital treatment.
The road was closed for over an hour while firefighters from West Linton, Penicuik and Edinburgh worked to clear the site.
The crash is the latest in a long line of serious accidents at the junction, of which two have proven fatal.
Improvements to lighting and signage were carried out at the crossroads at the end of last year, but the work has been criticised by safety campaigners who claim a roundabout is needed to cut accidents at the site.

Report commentHow many more accidents need to happen before anything is done, there was another bad crash 5 weeks ago with someone on the Moffat road not stopping and took out another car which went through the Leadburn Inn metal fence and took out three cars in the carpark, which could of been children!

Report commentThere should have been a roundabout in place years ago. That there hasn't been, is an affront to good sense and the lives lost in the accumulation of statistics which repeatedly highlight the blackspot.

Report commentYes a roundabout could help; But a traffic light filter would work just as well!!.
No one knows how to work the junction, hence numerous accidents.
Someone needs to make a decision, and since the roads are a disgrace they could at least put the money not used towards the rectification of this dangerous junction!!

Report commentThat's all we need, another expensive roundabout. Did that help at Gowkley Moss did it? No of course it didn't. Some people just can't use roads, no matter what layout it is in.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, why is no one else saying it? A 30 or 40mph zone through Leadburn would help no end. I would even allow a dreaded speed camera or two to catch those that think this is a joke. Why we've gone this long and we still have people doing 60mph legally through that junction is beyond me.
The answer is not to litter the place with signs either! How much would it really cost to tidy up the junction and make it a 30 zone, very little compared to a roundabout (and the inevitable disruption during the construction). At least if the accident rates do not drop, the seriousness of them would. Hell if that doesn't work, I'll shut up and suggest a roundabout!

Report commentI can see from the reactions to my previous post that a 30mph zone is not favoured. To find out why, I did some more reading and now understand a bit more. I live in Peebles, so I arrive at the junction and turn left, which is way easier than anyone else who has to go over the junction or - god forbid - have to make a right turn. Having reviewed the previous posts on all the previous articles I think a roundabout probably is the best answer. 30mph or not, people will still get confused over the right turn priority. I still believe a lot of this is down to driver skills and courtesy, but a roundabout would iron those issues out.
It is pretty ludicrous that this was on the cards then pulled by the Scottish Government (or Midlothian Council depending on which Peeblesshire News article you read!).
What has been done in terms of campaigns? Petitions? Lobbying? Anything? I don't think moaning on the Peeblesshire News web site is getting anywhere....

Report commentRoundabout all the way - less disruptive than traffic lights (nothing worse than red lights with nothing coming), and harder to ignore than a speed limit, which, as you've said Colin, probably wouldn't make much difference.

Report commentThere are number of factors, which should be considered while purchasing the Birkin bag for yourself. The above all factors are very important, but the most important factor is to consider is your budget. If you have plan to buy a purse for a short term then, do not invest big amount of money, but if you are buying for long term then look for good quality handbags which should last for long.
