PEEBLES is to receive a super-fast link up to the information highway.
British Telecom this week confirmed that the town has been included in the latest phase of its £2.5 billion super-fast fibre broadband programme.
Almost 4,300 homes and businesses will benefit from super-fast internet access.
Peebles along with Galashiels, will join Innerleithen, which was the first town in the Borders to be promised super-fast broadband after winning BT's Race to Infinity - a national survey of demand for the technology which invited communities to register interest.
BT's local network business Openreach is currently building the new network using a mix of fibre to the cabinet (FTTC) and fibre to the premises (FTTP) technologies.
Both provide much faster speeds than those previously available to Peebles homes and businesses.
FTTC, delivered to street cabinets, currently offers download speeds of up to 40Mbps and upstream speeds up to 10Mbps.
Openreach is planning to roughly double these speeds next year. FTTP, where the fibre goes directly to homes and businesses, will offer speeds of up to 100Mbps.
Brendan Dick, director of BT Scotland, said: "BT's roll-out of super-fast broadband is marching on.
"Residents and businesses in Peebles and Galashiels can look forward to choosing a high-speed connection over a network offering an unrivalled choice of suppliers, which keeps competition thriving and costs down."
Local MP David Mundell welcomed the news and said: "The arrival of super-fast broadband is a very important development for the Peeblesshire area and represents a significant investment.
"There is no doubt that faster broadband is a real benefit to householders and provides businesses with a competitive advantage. Today's announcement is a welcome step in the right direction and will give a long-term boost to our local economy."
