TA centre of attention in Galashiels
Peeblesshire News reporter Ally McGilvray joined the TA earlier this year.
MACHINE guns and mortars will be among an arsenal of weapons on display at the Territorial Army Centre in the Borders this weekend.
And potential recruits are being invited along to arm themselves with all the information they need to become a soldier.
The Royal Regiment of Scotland's TA Battalion is holding an open day at its centre in Paton Street, Galashiels, on Saturday, November 5, between 10am and 4pm.
Even the date itself - Guy Fawkes Day - is explosive.
A Company, 52nd Lowland, 6th Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland (6 SCOTS) is hosting the event for anyone interested in becoming part of the British Army as a reserve Soldier or Officer.
Are you looking for a challenge, or are you simply interested in seeing what soldiers in your local community get up to?
6 SCOTS is a Light Role Infantry Battalion which takes volunteers from all walks of life and trains them to be professional Infantry Soldiers and Officers.
As well as rifle platoons, the Battalion also has machine guns, mortars and a signals platoon with the opportunity for specialisation in these areas on successful completion of basic training. Once trained, Soldiers and Officers may also volunteer to deploy on operations.
Some of the soldiers from Galashiels are already serving or have served in Afghanistan.
The open day will include a number of stands with equipment on display including specialist weapons and communications equipment.
These will be manned by serving Soldiers and Officers, ranging from those still undergoing training to experienced veterans who have recently returned from operations where they were deployed alongside regular army personnel on the front line.
Alternatively, to find out more about the TA and how it can benefit you, drop in to the TA Centre in Galashiels (opposite Tesco) on Tuesday evenings between 7.30pm and 9.30pm.

Report commentGreat. Come and see all the guns, kids. Aren't they cool! Look at this one - it can pump little pieces of metal straight through a human body at 800 metres... isn't that brilliant?!
And check this one out - belt fed -we have to bolt it to a landrover 'cos it's so powerful, and it can chew through the breeze block walls of poor peoples houses like they just aren't there!
Right, now you've seen those, will you sign here please?. We promise to give you a minimal amount of training, and then you can happily spend the next four months squatting inside a sangar somewhere hot and dusty. Hopefully the locals won't shoot your legs or face into unrecognisable mush before it's time to go home. Do that for a year or two, then you'll be free to join one of the growing number of PMC's , stop all that queen and country pretence, and get down to the nitty-gritty of playing with guns and slaughtering poor foreign people - sorry, terrorists - for a little bit of money. Yeah!
