'The accused had difficulty steering but did not feel the need to take the phone away from his ear'
A 27-YEAR-OLD man continued to chat on his mobile phone and attempted to steer with only one hand as his car skidded in the snow - narrowly missing a parked car, a court heard this week.
Sebastian Lisiewicz, of Cademuir Drive, Peebles, was spotted by police driving a black Kia in "extremely hazardous conditions" - with the device held to his right ear - in the town's Whitehaugh Avenue on December 16.
However, as he attempted to negotiate a right hand bend, his car skidded and he attempted to steer his vehicle using only one hand, causing it to almost collided with a parked car.
Lisiewicz admitted a charge of careless driving by letter at the Justice of the Peace Court in Peebles on Thursday.
Tessa Bradley, prosecuting, said: "The road was extremely hazardous for driving and it was dark. The accused had difficulty steering but did not feel the need to take the phone away from his ear.
"He appears to have skidded towards the parked vehicle but there was no indication that he had hit it."
Justice of the Peace Bryan Brockie noted Lisiewicz already had six penalty points on his licence and deferred sentence for a personal appearance until March 15.
