Taj Mahal wins big
BIGGARS Taj Mahal may be well known to the local residents for its tasty curry's and excellent menu choice but it is the staff that are receiving high accolade this week after being named 'Team of the Year' at the Scottish Curry Awards.
Manager Abed Ullah and some members of the team went to the award ceremony which took place at the Thistle Hotel in Glasgow last Monday.
Abed told us: "I didn't think we were going to win. After we won I called the restaurant and the rest of the team celebrated, we even offered champagne to the customers that were in at the time."
The Awards, which have been running for five years, are responsible for giving recognition to some of the best curry spots in the UK with the Taj Mahal narrowly missing out as runners up for the past three years.
But this year they managed to beat off 500 other restaurants to the Team of the Year prize, even although they are much smaller than many of the restaurants in their category.
Abed told us: "The team are very excited to have won. It's a family run restaurant, so we try to create that family atmosphere with our staff. We want a friendly and relaxed atmosphere in the restaurant."
"I would what sets us apart is that we try to get to know customers. I have worked in the restaurant business for years and some places I worked, you didn't speak to customers except to ask for their order."
"We try to recognise people and relate to them, find out about their families and what they do. We hopefully provide a more personal atmosphere."
Abed and his team took over the Taj Mahal in 2007 and have since gone on to win the hearts of the local people and now they will be able to represent their town with their award proudly displayed for all to see.
Abed added: "I'm from Glasgow originally, so I really wanted to put Biggar on the map. I think in the last five years we have done that. We are now well known in this industry and hopefully will continue to be."
