What do you like about Peeblesshire?

PEEBLESSHIRE is the place many of us are lucky enough to live, work or call home. To find out what makes it so special, Peeblesshire News reporter ALAN FERGUSON went out and about to ask readers what they like most about our area. Here is what they said...

Retired teacher Kaye Sutherland, aged 65, from Peebles, said:

"The countryside is fantastic around Peeblesshire - I just like the hills around everywhere.

"As well as that, I like the area because there is plenty of sport for people to watch and take part in.

"Shops are great too. They're nice, little individual shops - which make the town a lot more appealing to me.

"It's definitely one of the better places in the Borders when it comes to shopping."

Retired Peebles High School supervisor Catherine Barrett, aged 79, from Peebles, said:

"You've got the scenery, you've got all the different kinds of shops, local places to eat - I think it's a great little tourist zone.

"You also have a theatre here as well, which is very good. You can go out for a nice meal then head to the theatre. There's something on every night!

"There's plenty pubs, plenty accomodation and even a caravan park. Oh, as well as that you have easy access to the cities - both Glasgow and Edinburgh."

Retired course manager Ronald McCrindle, aged 65, from Penicuik, said:

"We come down from Penicuik and I think Peebles is quite a busy wee town.

"You know, you got quite a selection of shops and things like that when you're here. The supermarket's don't seem to have taken over here yet. That's one really good thing about the town.

"The people are nice, too. Nine out of ten times I stop and speak to people and they'll speak back. Usually just a random, someone working away and the next thing you know you're in a conversation!"

Former site manager Gordon Finch, aged 65, from Peebles, said:

"I've stayed here all my life. It's one of the best places on this earth to be brought up in.

"I feel that Peebles is a safe town to live in. I play bridge and we finish at about quarter-to-eleven at night. There's maybe about 40 or 50 elderly people there and no body worries about walking home at night. And that's brilliant for a town like this.

"But an issue I think needs sorted out is with landlords and their empty shops on the High Street - they should be lowering their cost of rent to encourage businesses into them."

  was the reporter frightened to talk to the younger generation and get the real truth about peebles or would being told its cheeper to jump on a bus to edinburgh or galashiels for quality shopping not make good reading

  What do I like about Peeblesshire? In a word, 'potential'. That's what I like about Peeblesshire in 2013, but not a lot else. Peeblesshire has the potential to be a great place to live, but it is failing to meet that potential. The problems are not unique to Peeblesshire, the causes of these problems are not unique either. But they exist here and are far more apparent to the young and the less affluent. Peebles in particular has become a graphic illustration of the widening equality gap that blights our society, and the forces that drive it, namely greed and the acquisition of individual status. I'm sure Peebles is a lovely place to live if you are affluent - from that side of the gap you can afford to relax and enjoy the arty expensive specialist shops, the theatre, the spas, the restaurants, and other trappings. From there you can choose to ignore the appalling lack of support and services for the more vulnerable areas of our society. You are unaffected by low quality and overpriced bus services, you are oblivious to the utter abandonment of community, the lack of facilities for the young, the sick, the elderly. You can turn away from the hopelessness that faces those who simply want to live and work in the place their families have lived for generations. Yes, Peeblesshire is a lovely place, if you can afford to be here.
