THE Peebles Rotary Club’s Great Pigeon Race took place during the Agriculture show last month.

It was won in harsh and difficult conditions by the intrepid Tontine Tornado in a time that reflected the awful conditions on the day.

The Rotary Club’s race organiser George Cuthill heard from trainer Lawrie Raeburn that at the point of release in County Durham, all the birds were blown off course towards Newcastle and the dangers of the North Sea.

Happily Tontine Tornado managed to navigate homewards safely despite wind, rain and other natural dangers, and in a time that allowed Janice Wightman of Peebles to scoop the £100 prize.

The Rotary Club of Peebles is grateful for all the help and support they have received in running this annual event which raised almost £700, and they will be making a substantial donation to Tweeddale Youth Action in the near future.

Tontine Tornado was back in the skies again this weekend, flying in a similar race and Peebles Rotary wish him and the owner and trainer Lawrie Raeburn every success for the rest of the season.
