They were treated to a concert of music ranging from the jazz standards of the mid-20th century to more modern offerings drawing on folk and funk.

The band is an interesting mix of jazz veterans with the highly successful addition of young, local drummer Jonny Paterson. Possibly the highlight of the evening was a drum feature, penned by the band’s pianist Paul Beck and showing off the young drummer’s undoubted talents.

Sax player John Steele was delighted at both the size and enthusiasm of the audience and is keen to establish a regular jazz venue in Peebles itself. Inspired by the very positive audience reaction, his search for a hotel or pub willing to host such an event will continue.

This was the first jazz event at Kailzie Gardens and owner Lady Angela Buchan-Hepburn said she anticipated repeat performances becoming a welcome addition to the programme of summer events.

On Friday, August 14, Kailzie Gardens will host The Handlebards (described by Sir Ian McKellan as “uproariously funny”) performing “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”.
